Architecture and Thirds

I am lucky enough to be traveling to Shingu, Japan this summer. Upon finding this out, I decided to do a little more research on the area I will be visiting. Shingu is home to one of the Kumano Sanzan. These are the three "head shrines" of all Kumano shrines. They lie along a pilgrimage route and are within 20 to 40 km of each other.

The designs used on these shrines date back to the 11th century. The architecture used is very symmetrical and fits amazingly well with the rule of thirds grid. Below I have included several examples of this.

These are just a few examples about how the rule of thirds can been seen in everyday life. It has been used alongside symmetry to create the beautiful buildings you see above.

Seeing as I havent gone to Japan yet, none of the above photos are mine. Below you will see when I got them from.
